Indians' Sabathia back on track

May 2, 2008 - 1:49 PM Kansas City (12-16) at Cleveland (13-15) 7:05 pm EDT

CLEVELAND (Ticker) - C.C. Sabathia has officially put his rough start in the past.

Sabathia and the Cleveland Indians go for their third straight win on Friday when they open a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals.

The reigning American League Cy Young award winner, Sabathia (1-4, 7.88 ERA) was absolutely terrible in his first four starts this season, allowing 27 runs in 18 innings while posting an 0-3 record.

But the 27-year-old lefthander has returned to his dominant form over his last two starts, surrendering just one run and eight hits in 14 innings with 19 strikeouts.

Sabathia pitched well enough to earn the win during his last start, but despite yielding just one run and four hits in eight innings, the Indians suffered a 1-0 loss to the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

Luke Hochevar (1-1, 5.91) counters for the Royals, who have lost two straight games.

The 24-year-old righthander, who was called up on April 20 after pitcher Hideo Nomo was designated for assignment, gave up just one run and six hits in six innings en route to his first win of the season during Monday's 2-1 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays.
