Struggling Yankees face nemesis Bedard, Mariners

BRONX, New York (Ticker) - Erik Bedard is the last pitcher the struggling New York Yankees want to face.

Bedard takes the mound on Friday as the Seattle Mariners visit the Yankees in the opener of a three-game series.

New York, which has lost three straight and six of its last eight games, is all too familiar with how good Bedard is.

The former Baltimore ace is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his last five starts vs. the Yankees. In addition, the lefthander has not allowed an earned run in his last 20 innings vs. New York.

To make matters worse, Bedard (2-0, 2.04 ERA) appears to be over the hip injury that landed him on the disabled list. The lefthander allowed just two hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 5-3 victory over Oakland on Saturday - his first start since being activated.

Bedard will have the luxury of facing a Yankees' lineup that is missing reigning American League MVP Alex Rodriguez (quad) and Jorge Posada (shoulder), who are both on the disabled list.

The Yankees will try and rebound from Thursday's 8-4 loss to Detroit behind ace Chien-Ming Wang (5-0, 3.23).

Wang allowed four hits in seven innings of a 1-0 victory over Cleveland on Sunday. The righthanded sinkerballer is looking to join Arizona's Brandon Webb as the only pitchers to start 6-0.
