Padilla looks to stifle surprisingly hot A's

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) - Vicente Padilla looks to lead the Texas Rangers to a season-high third straight win on Friday in the opener of a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics.

Padilla tossed a seven-hitter for his third career complete game shutout in a 10-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Padilla (3-2, 3.79 ERA) will look to follow up a stellar performance from Sidney Ponson. Ponson threw eight solid innings and Ramon Vazquez hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning to lead the Rangers to a 2-1 victory over Kansas City on Thursday.

The Rangers, who have two starters on the disabled list, need Padilla to continue his strong start.

However, the righthander will have to deal with a surprising A's lineup that can be very explosive. Jack Cust hit a go-ahead home run that sparked a eight-run fifth inning as Oakland rolled to a 15-8 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Thursday.

The A's are seventh in baseball with 135 runs.

Joe Blanton (2-4, 4.07) would like to see them keep up their current pace. The burly righthander allowed two runs and eight hits in seven innings of a 4-2 victory over Seattle on Sunday.
