Orioles continue road trip, eyeing more success
May 3, 2008 - 12:27 PM Baltimore (16-13) at LA Angels (18-13) 3:45 pm EDTANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - The Baltimore Orioles' 10-game road trip got off to a nice start and they will attempt continue that trend when they face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Saturday.
Nick Markakis homered and drove in a pair of runs Friday as the Orioles held on for a 4-3 victory against the Angels in the series opener. Markakis leads the club with a .284 batting average and five home runs this season.
"(Markakis) is a great hitter," Baltimore outfielder Jay Payton said. "We mixed it up today and it worked out for us. We haven't been swinging the bats great as a team, and we were able to push enough runs across."
Torii Hunter and Casey Kotchman both had RBI singles Friday for Anaheim, which managed just four hits before the ninth inning - where George Sherrill recorded his 11th save and tied the Angels' Francisco Rodriguez for the major league lead.
Hoping to avoid their third consecutive loss, the Angels will send righthander Jon Garland (3-3, 5.94 ERA) to the mound. Garland was roughed up for seven runs and 10 hits over six innings in his last outing, a 14-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Monday.
The Orioles will counter with Daniel Cabrera (2-0, 4.14), who has allowed just two runs in each of his previous three starts.
The Dominican righthander's last start was in Monday's suspended game against the Chicago White Sox. He yielded four hits and seven walks over 6 1/3 frames.
