Beckett, Shields to square off again

BOSTON (Ticker) - Josh Beckett and James Shields will clash for the second time in a week when the Boston Red Sox host the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

The Red Sox took the series opener on Friday, posting five runs in the fourth inning en route to a 7-3 win.

It was just the second victory for Boston in its last 10 meetings with Tampa Bay, which swept a three-game series at Tropicana Field last weekend.

Beckett faced Shields in the finale of last weekend's series.

The Boston ace (2-2, 4.10 ERA) was sharp, allowing just two runs - one earned - and four hits in seven innings while striking out a career-high 13 and issuing just one walk.

Beckett was victimized by his own error in the third when a botched throw to first allowed the first Tampa Bay run to score.

That run proved to be all the Rays needed behind Shields (3-1, 2.54), who yielded just two hits while striking out seven and walking one in his first career shutout.

Beckett is attempting to become the second Boston pitcher in a row to notch a win after rookie Clay Buchholz earned the win on Friday. Prior to Friday, no Red Sox starter had won since April 21.

The 26-year-old Shields has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his six starts this season and has issued only nine walks in 39 innings.

Shields has been part of an improving Tampa Bay club that missed an opportunity Friday to move to five games over .500 for the first time in club history.
