Verlander tries to move Tigers closer to .500
May 3, 2008 - 1:07 PM Detroit (14-16) at Minnesota (14-14) 7:10 pm EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) - Justin Verlander attempts to keep the Detroit Tigers on the right track Saturday in the second game of their weekend series against the Minnesota Twins.
The Tigers stumbled to a 2-10 start, but have responded with 12 wins in their last 18 games to move back into contention.
After posting a career best with 18 wins last season, Verlander (1-4, 6.50 ERA) has been horrific in 2008, giving up at least five runs in four of his six outings.
The hard-throwing righthander was rocked at home in his last start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who tagged Verlander for six runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old owns a 3-3 record with a 4.00 ERA through six career appearances against the Twins, who have won three straight games.
In Friday's series opener, Livan Hernandez pitched seven superb innings and Justin Morneau drove in two runs to carry Minnesota to a convincing 11-1 blowout win over Detroit.
Scott Baker (2-0, 4.50) takes the hill for Minnesota with the hopes of finally breaking through after three consecutive starts without a winning decision.
The 6-4 righthander gave up three runs and five hits over seven innings but did not register a decision during a 6-5 setback at Detroit on April 15. He is 2-3 all-time in the series.
