After slow start, Pence getting back on track

May 3, 2008 - 1:18 PM Milwaukee (16-13) at Houston (14-16) 7:05 pm EDT

HOUSTON (Ticker) - Hunter Pence appears to be finding his swing.

Pence and the Houston Astros go for their second straight win on Saturday when they continue a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pence posted a .322 batting average with 17 home runs and 69 RBI in 108 games during his rookie season a year ago. He has struggled early in this campaign, but appears to be turning the corner with two hits in each of his last two games.

The 25-year-old right fielder had two home runs and three RBI during Friday's 7-4 victory over the Brewers in the series opener.

"I felt like (on Friday I was) just getting balance in the box and being ready to hit," Pence said. "My foot was down instead of everything jumping (and) I let the ball get to me a little more."

Pence tries to continue his hot hitting on Saturday against Brewers starter Manny Parra (1-1, 4.94 ERA).

Parra allowed just two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings on Sunday but did not factor in the decision as Milwaukee dropped a 3-2 decision to the Florida Marlins.

Brandon Backe (1-3, 4.65) counters for the Astros. The 30-year-old righthander surrendered four runs and five hits in five innings en route to a 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
