Maddux again denied as Marlins rout Padres
May 4, 2008 - 9:35 PM By Christopher Stock PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterMIAMI (Ticker) -- Dan Uggla homered and drove in three runs to help lead the Florida Marlins to a 10-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday as Greg Maddux failed in a fourth attempt for his 350th career victory.
Uggla had three of the Marlins' 16 hits, including a solo homer off Maddux in the second inning and a two-run double that completed Florida 's scoring in the eighth.
"I thought (Maddux) pitched pretty well," Uggla said. "We had some things go right for us and that was the difference. They very easily could have gone the other way, but I thought he pitched well."
Maddux's line, however, did not look impressive as he yielded five runs - four earned - and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Maddux (2-3) is attempting to become the ninth pitcher in major league history to reach the 350-win plateau, but the the future Hall of Famer is just 1-5 in his last six decisions against the Marlins.
"I just didn't throw it hard enough to get by," Maddux said. "It's plain and simple."
"He hung in there," Padres manager Bud Black added. "Maybe not his best day, but they just hit it through the holes."
Maddux was outpitched by Andrew Miller (2-2), who allowed two runs and four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in six strong innings. Miller came into Sunday's start with an ERA of 9.12.
"(The 350 wins) is to be on his conscience, not mine," Miller said. "I had my own battles I had to go out there and fight. I wanted to pitch well for myself and wasn't concerned with him getting 350."
Adrian Gonzalez hit a solo homer off Miller to give the Padres a 2-1 lead in the third. It was Gonzalez's eighth homer of the season and fourth in the last five games.
"I wanted it to be more down, but he just got out there in front and barrelled it," Miller said. "Certainly I would love to have it back. When it came out of my hand, I thought it was a pretty decent breaking ball but it just had too much of the plate."
But the Marlins took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Mike Jacobs singled to lead off and after Jorge Cantu struck out, Uggla doubled off the left-field scoreboard. Maddux issued an intentional walk to Luis Gonzalez to load the bases.
Matt Treanor singled on a ground ball that bounced off the glove of a diving Kevin Kouzmanoff at third base, allowing Jacobs to score. Miller's groundout produced the go-ahead run.
"It is what it is, especially when (expletive) is going bad," Maddux said.
In the sixth, Cody Ross delivered an RBI single, with a second run scoring on right fielder Brian Giles' error.
The Marlins tacked on three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Black was ejected in the seventh inning by plate umpire Sam Holbrook for arguing after a swinging strike by Justin Huber.
