Mariners turning corner on dismal start

May 6, 2008 - 12:34 PM Texas (13-20) at Seattle (14-19) 10:10 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) - After snapping a five-game losing streak, the Seattle Mariners are hoping to turn the corner on their early season woes.

The Mariners go for their second straight win when they continue a four-game series against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.

Seattle scored just nine runs and batted only .215 over its recent slide, falling to the bottom of the American League West division.

However, during the series opener on Monday, the Mariners scored seven runs and pounded out 10 hits en route to a 7-3 victory against the Rangers, who are now in sole possession of last place in the AL West.

Miguel Batista (2-3, 4.41 ERA) tries to continue the momentum on Tuesday when he takes the mound for Seattle.

The 37-year-old righthander allowed just one run and four hits in seven innings, walking three while striking out six but did not factor in the decision during Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

After earning his first win since May 1, 2007 during his last outing, Sidney Ponson (1-0, 1.35) makes his second start of the season for the Rangers.
