Slumping Rockies aim to breakout vs. Cardinals

May 7, 2008 - 12:30 PM St Louis (22-12) at Colorado (12-21) 8:35 pm EDT

DENVER (Ticker) - The Colorado Rockies' 2007 magical run is a distant memory.

The last-place Rockies aim to snap out of their funk on Wednesday as they continue a four-games series with the surging St. Louis Cardinals.

Braden Looper pitched well into the ninth and Rick Ankiel homered as the Cardinals posted a 6-5 victory on Tuesday.

Colorado surprised everyone last season, winning 21 of its last 22 games en route to its first World Series appearance.

That seems like eons ago now. The Rockies, who have lost 13 of 16, are owners of the worst record in baseball.

Aaron Cook has been the lone bright spot, as he has more wins (5) than the rest of the starting rotation (3).

Jeff Francis (0-3, 5.26 ERA) is part of that struggling staff. The lefthander was tagged for four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 11-6 loss to Los Angeles on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals have been surprisingly good to start the season. Part of the reason the Cardinals are off to a hot start is the performance of their ace, Adam Wainwright (3-1, 2.60).

The righthander has allowed just four runs and nine hits in his last 17 1/3 innings. Wainwright allowed one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings, but did not factor into the decision of a 5-3 win over Chicago on Friday.

St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols has reached base in every game this season.
