Young hurlers duel when Dimondbacks host Phillies
May 7, 2008 - 12:33 PM Philadelphia (19-15) at Arizona (22-11) 9:40 pm EDTPHOENIX (Ticker) - After a pair of 40-something veteran pitchers stole the show in the first two games of the series, the young guns will have their chance to shine Wednesday when the Arizona Diamondbacks host the Philadelphia Phillies in the third of a four-game set.
The Diamondbacks will send Micah Owings (4-1, 4.42 ERA) to the mound, while the Phillies counter with fellow righthander Kyle Kendrick (2-2, 5.01).
Owings, who started the season with four wins in as many starts, is coming off his worst outing of the campaign.
The 25-year-old was roughed up for seven runs - six earned - and 10 hits with three walks and a season-high two strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings during Friday's 7-2 loss to the New York Mets.
Kendrick did not receive a decision in his last start - a 6-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday - but Philadelphia has won each of the three times the 23-year-old has taken the mound.
The second-year pro tossed six frames Friday, allowing three runs and eight hits with six strikeouts.
Randy Johnson hurled six effective innings and Stephen Drew belted a three-run homer to key a five-run fourth inning Tuesday, leading the Diamondbacks to a 6-4 victory over the Phillies.
In Monday's series opener, 44-year-old Jamie Moyer befuddled Arizona's offense, the second-highest scoring unit in the NL. He even helped his own cause, collecting two hits and an RBI in an 11-4 rout of the Diamondbacks.
