Pirates seek first three-game series sweep

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates look to complete their first three-game series sweep of the season when they host the San Francisco Giants in the finale on Thursday.

The Pirates hand the ball to Paul Maholm (2-3, 4.58 ERA), who hopes to bounce back after getting pounded for seven runs and 10 hits over just five innings in a 9-8 loss at Washington on Saturday.

Maholm owns a 1-0 record with a 2.40 ERA against the Giants in two career starts. The 6-2 lefthander also features a 2-0 mark in three starts at home this season.

Matt Cain (1-2, 4.08 ERA) counters for the Giants. Cain allowed two runs and three hits with season-best eight strikeouts in seven innings in his last starts Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The righthander is seeking his first win in three lifetime appearances against the Pirates. He is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in the series.

Since stumbling through his first four starts this season, Cain has rebounded nicely to post an impressive 1.40 ERA over his last three outings.

Xavier Nady delivered a two-run homer in the fourth inning off struggling Giants starter Barry Zito to lift Pittsburgh to a 3-1 victory Wednesday.
