Webb eyes franchise-record eighth straight win

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Brandon Webb aims for a franchise-record eighth straight win Thursday as the Arizona Diamondbacks look to win the rubber game of three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Webb (7-0, 2.49 ERA), who won the National League Cy Young Award in 2006 and finished second in the voting last season, has established himself as the early front-runner for the award.

The righthander tied Randy Johnson's franchise mark on Sunday, despite not being very sharp. Webb allowed a season-high four runs and five hits in six innings of a 10-4 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday.

Five days later, Webb will attempt to shatter Johnson's mark of seven straight wins set in 2000. The sinkerballer also hopes to help Arizona avoid dropping a second straight series for the first time this season.

The Phillies will counter with Brett Myers (2-2, 4.70), who is coming off his best start of the season. Myers allowed two runs and six hits with a season-high 10 strikeouts in seven innings, but did not factor in the decision of 3-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.

Chase Utley plated the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning Wednesday to lead the Phillies to a 5-4 victory.
