Struggling Glavine seeks first win of season
May 9, 2008 - 12:36 PM Atlanta (18-15) at Pittsburgh (15-19) 7:05 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) - Tom Glavine's return to the Atlanta Braves has not gone very well.
Glavine takes the hill on Friday looking for his first win of the season as the Braves visit the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a three-game series.
The future Hall of Famer returned to Atlanta - where he spent the first 16 seasons of his career - this offseason after five up-and-down years with the New York Mets.
Things have not gone smoothly for Glavine to say the least. The lefthander landed on the disabled list for the first time in his career this season with a hamstring injury, and has been largely ineffective when healthy.
Glavine (0-1, 4.50 ERA) could not hold a sizeable lead on Sunday as the two-time Cy Young Award winner was rocked for six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings during a 14-7 victory over Cincinnati.
Glavine and the Braves will look to overcome their road woes and win a seventh straight. Atlanta, which is a major-league worst 4-11 on the road, posted a 5-4 victory over San Diego on the strength of a ninth-inning walk-off single from Matt Diaz.
Pittsburgh aims to match its season high four-game winning streak behind struggling ace Ian Snell, who is 0-2 with a 6.04 ERA in his last four starts. Snell (2-2, 5.09) allowed four runs and 10 hits in six innings of a 5-2 loss to Washington on Sunday.
