Surprising Marlins travel to Washington

May 9, 2008 - 12:43 PM Florida (20-14) at Washington (15-20) 7:35 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Florida Marlins have surged to the top of the National League East with a four-game win streak.

The Marlins go for their season-high fifth straight victory on Friday when they open a three-game series with the Washington Nationals.

Despite a young and inexperienced lineup, the Marlins are one game in front of the Philadelphia Phillies (20-16) for first place in the division with a 7-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday.

But, Florida is trying to keep the early success in perspective.

"It's a little bit early to look at the standings," outfielder Jeremy Hermida said. "We got a lot of games left and we know we've had our ups and downs. Just because you start off hot doesn't mean we'll end up on top at the end."

Ricky Nolasco (1-3, 6.10 ERA) tries to snap a three-game losing streak when he takes the mound for the Marlins on Friday.

The 25-year-old righthander allowed six runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings en route to a 7-2 loss to the San Diego Padres on Saturday.

Tim Redding (4-2, 3.20) counters for the Nationals seeking his second win in as many starts.
