Cardinals try to bounce back from blown save
May 10, 2008 - 1:21 PM St Louis (22-15) at Milwaukee (17-18) 3:40 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals look to bounce back from yet another heart-breaking loss when they continue a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.
The Cardinals held a one-run lead entering the ninth inning on Friday. After getting the first two outs of the frame on two pitches, closer Jason Isringhausen surrendered a pair of singles and a walk before Rickie Weeks lifted the Brewers to a 4-3 victory with a two-run single to left field.
It was the fourth blown save of the season and second consecutive for Isringhausen (1-4, 7.47 ERA), who failed to close the door just two days earlier in his last outing.
Weeks is batting just .196 this season but appears to be turning the corner on his early-season woes, logging two hits on Friday for the first time in seven games.
Joel Pineiro (2-2, 4.33) tries to help St. Louis bounce back when he takes the mound on Saturday.
The righthander allowed four runs - three earned - and eight hits while striking out one in three innings but did not factor in the decision during Monday's 6-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
Ben Sheets (4-0, 2.29 ERA) counters for the Brewers after falling short of his fifth win in as many starts on Sunday.
The 29-year-old righthander surrendered four runs and seven hits while striking out six in 6 1/3 innings but did not factor in the decision as Milwaukee dropped an 8-6 decision to the Houston Astros.
