Pirates' Sanchez excelling in leadoff role
May 10, 2008 - 2:19 PM Atlanta (18-16) at Pittsburgh (16-19) 7:05 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Freddy Sanchez single-handedly helped the Pittsburgh Pirates tie a season high for consecutive wins. He will try to keep the momentum going on Saturday.
Sanchez and the Pirates go for their fifth straight win when they continue a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves.
The 30-year-old second baseman drove in all three runs, including the game-winner with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, to lift Pittsburgh to a 3-2 victory over the Braves on Friday.
Sanchez, the 2006 National League batting champion, is hitting just .261 this season but is 7-for-13 since moving to the leadoff spot.
Tom Gorzelanny (2-3, 6.91 ERA) returns to the Pirates rotation on Saturday after he was forced to skip his previous start due to discomfort in his lower back.
The 25-year-old lefthander pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and five walks while striking out four, in earning the win during Pittsburgh's 13-1 drubbing of the New York Mets on April 30.
Atlanta counters with lefthander Chuck James (2-1, 7.62 ERA), who is seeking his third win in as many starts.
