Maddux takes fifth shot at 350th win vs. Rockies
May 10, 2008 - 2:34 PM Colorado (15-21) at San Diego (12-24) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres are the worst team in the major leagues due mainly to a putrid offense that has scored four runs or less in 13 of their last 15 games.
Greg Maddux will be hoping for just a few runs of support Saturday when he takes his fifth shot at career win No. 350 when the Padres host the Colorado Rockies.
Maddux (2-3, 4.09 ERA) has received a total of just four runs of support when he has been on the mound since notching his 349th win on April 13 at Los Angeles. The 42-year-old righthander was knocked around on Sunday, giving up five runs - four earned - and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings to suffer a loss.
A four-time National League Cy Young Award winner, Maddux will be looking to join Cy Young, Walter Johnson, Pete Alexander, Christy Mathewson, Pud Galvin, Warren Spahn, Kid Nichols and Roger Clemens in the exclusive 350-win club.
The Rockies won the series opener on Friday as Aaron Cook induced 16 groundouts while allowing just one run and three hits in seven innings. Brad Hawpe drove in two runs and Matt Holliday homered.
Colorado has won three games in a row while San Diego has dropped five straight.
The Rockies will look to push it to four straight with righthander Ubaldo Jimenez (1-2, 5.82) on Saturday. The 24-year-old allowed four runs - three earned - and seven hits in five innings, walking three while striking out four, in his fourth straight no-decision during Monday's 6-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
