Anderson, Quentin fuel White Sox past Mariners

May 11, 2008 - 6:48 AM SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Chicago White Sox wasted no time letting their offense do the talking.

Brian Anderson and Carlos Quentin both homered during a six-run second inning as the White Sox posted an 8-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.

Chicago opened this one up early as Paul Konerko singled and took third one out later on Joe Crede's double to left before both came home on Anderson's first homer of the season off Seattle starter Jarrod Washburn (2-5).

"Washburn does a great job mixing (it) up on both sides of the plate," Anderson said. "Fortunately, I got into a hitter's count and just tried to stay up the middle. I looked in the right spot and got a good pitch to hit."

The 26-year-old Anderson had not homered since his solo shot on September 24, 2006 at home against Seattle. Of his 11 career home runs, five have come against the Mariners and four have been hit at Safeco Field.

"This is the only place away from U.S. Cellular I've hit a home run," Anderson added. "All my home runs on the road have come here. I feel good here. For some reason I just see the ball well here."

The White Sox continued to light up the scoreboard in the inning off the 33-year-old Washburn as Orlando Cabrera hit an RBI double and scored on Quentin's two-run blast. It was Quentin's ninth homer of the season.

Nick Swisher joined in on the fun in the fifth frame with a run-scoring triple to plate Jermaine Dye, extending the lead to 7-1.

"We're back now," Chicago catcher Toby Hall said. "Sometimes you have to take a step backward to go forward and that's what we did. This was one of our big goals, to get on this road trip, get hot and get back to Chicago."

White Sox starter Javier Vazquez (4-3) picked up the win, giving up three runs and four hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. It was his first victory in four outings.

Adrian Beltre stroked a solo homer in the fourth frame and added a two-run single in the sixth for Seattle, which has lost five games in a row.

The Mariners had a chance to draw closer with two outs and runners on the corners. But Ichiro Suzuki was thrown out at home after Willie Bloomquist stole second without White Sox reliever Octavio Dotel throwing a pitch. Bloomquist slid in safely ahead of Dotel's throw to second, but Suzuki couldn't beat Juan Uribe's relay to the plate.

Despite the loss, Seattle manager John McLaren saw some positive signs from his offense that has managed only seven runs during its five-game losing streak.

"It looked like there were different hitters up there," McLaren said. "A loss is a loss, but there were a few games there where we didn't have anything. We didn't have any fire, there was nothing there, but we had some fire (and) enthusiasm. There are some positives there."

Washburn was pounded for seven runs and eight hits through five frames. The lefthander has allowed six home runs over four of his five losses this season.

"The guys did a great job of battling back and not giving up, scraping and fighting to get back in the game," Washburn said. "I didn't give us a chance to win today."
