Looper, Cardinals set to face struggling Brewers
May 11, 2008 - 1:50 PM St Louis (23-15) at Milwaukee (17-19) 2:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Braden Looper will look to build off his longest career outing when the St. Louis Cardinals square off against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday in the third of a four-game series.
A former reliever, Looper (5-1, 3.95 ERA) tossed a career-high 8 1/3 innings during Tuesday's 6-5 triumph over the Colorado Rockies. He allowed four runs and 10 hits with no walks and a strikeout.
The 33-year-old Looper is looking for his third straight victory in this one. He already defeated the Brewers once this season, pitching five effective frames in a 6-1 win in St. Louis on April 15.
Despite dropping Jason Isringhausen from his role as closer Saturday, the Cardinals pulled out a 5-3 victory, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Looking to rebound, Milwaukee will send struggling righthander Jeff Suppan (1-2, 5.22) to the mound.
Suppan is hoping to avoid his third straight loss after he gave up three runs and eight hits with three walks in five innings during Tuesday's 3-0 setback to the Florida Marlins.
The Brewers have lost seven of their last eight games, averaging just 2.9 runs in that span.
