Red Sox look to recover in Baltimore
May 13, 2008 - 12:50 PM Boston (24-17) at Baltimore (19-19) 7:05 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox dropped three of four over the weekend at a venue that has always given them trouble, the Metrodome. On Tuesday they will visit the Baltimore Orioles and a venue that feels more like home.
With the best home record in the majors at 14-5, the Red Sox have not been as impressive on the road this season, falling to 10-12 after a 7-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Monday.
But Boston is 19-8 at Camden Yards over the past three seasons, getting support from thousands of fans who make the drive to Baltimore on a regular basis.
The Orioles took three of four from the Kansas City Royals over the weekend, dropping the finale 4-0 when Brian Bannister shut down the lineup.
Offense has been a problem all season for Baltimore, as the team ranks 13th in the American League in runs scored. Nick Markakis leads the team in hitting with a .267 batting average.
Josh Beckett (4-2, 3.70 ERA) will try to work his way through that lineup for the Red Sox on Tuesday. The ace righthander is coming off his best start of the season Thursday at Detroit, when he allowed one run and six hits in seven innings while striking out eight to pick up the win.
Beckett notched his 1,000th career strikeout in the win and has set down 42 batters in 41 1/3 innings this season.
The Orioles will counter with Jeremy Guthrie (1-3, 4.32). The righthander did not factor in the decision last Wednesday at Oakland, surrendering four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 frames.
