Indians look to move above .500 vs. Athletics
May 13, 2008 - 12:55 PM Oakland (23-16) at Cleveland (19-19) 7:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - The Cleveland Indians will look to end a day above .500 for the first time since April 3 when they host the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday.
The Indians were expected to pick up where they left off last season when they came within one game of the World Series. But between early-season pitching woes and recently-stalled offense, the club has yet to find a perfect balance.
Cleveland briefly pulled above .500 Monday when they took the opener of a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays, with Fausto Carmona leading the way to a 3-0 victory.
But the offense could not get anything going against Shaun Marcum in the nightcap and wasted another outstanding effort from Cliff Lee to fall, 3-0, in 10 innings.
Jhonny Peralta is batting .208 and Travis Hafner is at .218 thus far, wasting the stellar season by Victor Martinez.
Paul Byrd (1-3, 4.28 ERA) will get the start for Cleveland on Tuesday. The soft-tossing righthander got knocked around last Wednesday at New York, allowing five runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings, surrendering three homers while suffering a loss.
The A's will counter with Justin Duchscherer (3-1, 2.45). The converted reliever has picked up the win in each of his last two starts, allowing a combined two earned runs in 12 innings.
Oakland dropped two of three to the Texas Rangers over the weekend but still sits atop the American League Central.
