Vargas makes season debut vs. Nationals

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - Claudio Vargas will make his season debut on Wednesday as the New York Mets continue their four-game series against the Washington Nationals.

Vargas, who spent the first two years of his major league career with the Nationals' franchise - when they were the Montreal Expos - is 0-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two career starts against Washington.

Released by Milwaukee just before the start of the season, the righthanded Vargas went 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts at Class AAA New Orleans before being added to the roster on Tuesday.

His counterpart on the mound will be Tim Redding (4-3, 3.83 ERA), who will be trying to remain perfect away from home this season. However, the righthander was roughed up for six runs and four hits with four walks over 5 1/3 innings in a 7-3 loss to Florida on Friday.

Redding will hope to avoid losing consecutive starts for the first time this season.

Former Nationals outfielder Ryan Church homered, doubled and finished with four RBI in Tuesday's 6-3 win over Washington, which has lost six of its last eight games.
