Laffey aims to continue Indians' amazing pitching run

May 15, 2008 - 12:37 PM Oakland (23-18) at Cleveland (21-19) 12:05 pm EDT

CLEVELAND (Ticker) - Aaron Laffey looks to continue an incredible run by the Cleveland Indians' starting rotation on Thursday when the club goes for a three-game series sweep of the Oakland Athletics.

Cleveland starters have not allowed a run over the past 43 1/3 innings, including C.C. Sabathia's 2-0 shutout on Wednesday.

Last Friday, Laffey (1-2, 1.83 ERA) tossed seven scoreless innings - after Sabathia had pitched a pair of scoreless frames a game earlier - to begin the impressive stretch.

Fausto Carmona and Cliff Lee each pitched nine scoreless innings in Monday's doubleheader and Paul Byrd followed with 7 1/3 more on Tuesday when Oakland came into town.

As a result, the Indians have posted four shutouts over their last five contests, giving them a major league-best seven. The team hasn't enjoyed a scoreless streak from their starters like this since a 48-inning run in 1948 - the last time Cleveland won the World Series.

"I can't recall anything like this," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "It's pretty special stuff what they are putting together right now."

Laffey is just 1-1 over his last two starts filling in for the injured Jake Westbrook. The lefthander tossed seven strong innings, yielding six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in a 12-0 win over Toronto on Sunday.

His counterpart on the mound will be Greg Smith (2-2, 3.00), who is winless over his last three starts. The rookie lefthander allowed a season-high four earned runs and six hits over six frames, taking the loss in a 4-0 setback against the Texas Rangers on Friday.
