Matsuzaka hopes to lift struggling Red Sox
May 17, 2008 - 2:27 PM Milwaukee (20-21) at Boston (24-19), 3:55 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- Daisuke Matsuzaka looks to maintain his perfect record this season when the Boston Red Sox open a three-game interleague series against the Milwaukee Brewers with a doubleheader Saturday.
The series opener was due to take place on Friday night, but wet conditions and inclement weather forced a postponement after a delay of 85 minutes.
Boston has lost four straight contests and returns to Fenway Park after a 4-6 road trip. The reigning World Series champions have not lost five in a row since dropping six straight in August 2006.
Matsuzaka (6-0, 2.45 ERA) appears to be just the player to end the trend, as Boston has won his last 10 starts - including the 2007 postseason.
Matsuzaka, who trails only Cleveland's Fausto Carmona for the major league lead with 30 walks, showed better control in Saturday's 5-2 victory at Minnesota. The righthander yielded two runs, walked three and struck out seven over seven innings.
After missing two games due to a death in the family, manager Terry Francona will return to the Red Sox, who were 12-6 in interleague play last season.
Jeff Suppan (2-2, 4.63), who is coming off one of his best outings of the season, gets the call for the Brewers. The righthander ended a six-game slide with a 5-3 victory over St. Louis on Sunday, allowing one run over seven frames.
This is the Brewers' first trip to Fenway since 1997.
