Rookie starters highlight Diamondbacks-Tigers matchup

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- A pair of rookie hurlers will take the mound Saturday when the red-hot Arizona Diamondbacks battle the slumping Detroit Tigers in the middle contest of a three-game interleague series.

The Diamondbacks seek their fifth straight win behind 23-year-old Max Scherzer (0-1, 3.14 ERA), who is making just his third career start. He allowing one unearned run and five hits with a walk and six strikeouts over six innings during last Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

The Tigers counter with fellow rookie righthander Armando Galarraga (2-1, 3.07), who is making his seventh career start.

The 26-year-old Galarraga was tagged for five runs and seven hits with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 frames in a 10-9 triumph over the Boston Red Sox on May 7.

Galarraga is facing a tough task as tries to end the Detroit's seven-game road losing streak against the National League's top club. Arizona already has opened up a 5 1/2-game lead in the NL West.

The Tigers, who own the second-worst record in the American League, also are looking to snap an overall five-game slide.
