Bannister starts for red-hot Royals

May 17, 2008 - 3:26 PM Kansas City (20-21) at Florida (23-18) 7:10 pm EDT

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Kansas City Royals hope to extend their season-high five-game winning streak Saturday when they continue their interleague series against the Florida Marlins.

Brett Tomko threw six solid innings and former Marlin Miguel Olivo homered as Kansas City posted a 7-6 victory on Friday. The win pulled the Royals (20-21) within one game of .500.

The Royals start Brian Bannister (4-4, 3.75 ERA), who is looking to build on his best outing of the season.

The righthander held Baltimore to just two hits in eight innings in Sunday's 4-0 victory. Prior to that, Bannister had allowed 14 runs in 16 1/3 innings. He yielded just two runs and three hits in his first 21 innings of the campaign.

The Royals last won six a row from June 24-29 of last season.

Florida is heading in the opposite direction, having lost four straight for the first time this year. The slide has dropped the Marlins into a first-place tie with Philadelphia in the NL East.

Florida aims to get back in the win column behind Scott Olsen (4-1, 2.63), who did not get a decision his last time out. He allowed four runs and six hits over six innings in Sunday's 5-4 victory over Washington.
