Francis targeting first win of season

May 18, 2008 - 2:59 PM Minnesota (21-21) at Colorado (16-27) 3:05 pm EDT

DENVER (Ticker) -- In part because of 17-game winner Jeff Francis, the Colorado Rockies advanced to their first World Series last season. Nearly two months into the 2008 campaign, he still has yet to taste victory.

Francis eyes his first win of the season when the Rockies attempt to take the rubber game of a three-game interleague series with the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Credited with the win in Game One of the National League Championship Series last fall, Francis' (0-4, 6.27 ERA) future as staff ace appeared to be a solid bet. However, three starts this season against the team he beat in the playoffs last season, Arizona, have been disastrous and doomed his team to an awful start.

The lefthander was at his worst in his last outing, surrendering eight runs and 13 hits over just 4 2/3 innings in an 8-4 loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. His 0-3 record and 11.25 ERA against Arizona have done very little for his confidence.

Francis hopes a fresh start against the Twins, a team he has never faced before, will be the cure for his ills and lead Colorado to its first series win since taking two of three at Houston from April 18-20.

Kevin Slowey (0-3, 5.79) isn't faring much better, failing to make it through six innings in any of his three turns in the rotation. However, the righthander did work a season-high 5 2/3 innings in Tuesday's 5-3 loss against Toronto, allowing three runs and five hits.
