Dempster excelling in return to rotation

HOUSTON (Ticker) - The Chicago Cubs made the right move by putting Ryan Dempster in the starting rotation.

Dempster and the Cubs go for their third straight win on Tuesday when they continue a three-game series against the Houston Astros.

After spending the last three seasons as Chicago's closer, Dempster (5-1, 2.35 ERA) has been dominate in his return to the rotation this season, ranking seventh in the majors in ERA while his team has posted a 7-2 record in his starts.

The 31-year-old righthander had his best outing of the season on Thursday, pitching 8 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing six hits and striking out a career-high 12 to lead the Cubs to a 4-0 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Chris Sampson (2-3, 6.46) tries to bounce back from a dismal outing when he takes the mound for the Astros on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old righthander gave up seven runs - five earned - and 10 hits in six innings but did not factor in the decision during Thursday's thrilling 8-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
