Masterson has tough act to follow vs. Royals
May 20, 2008 - 1:26 PM Kansas City (21-23) at Boston (28-19) 7:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - Justin Masterson makes his second start of the season when the Boston Red Sox continue their four-game set against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.
Masterson (0-0, 1.50 ERA) has a tough act to follow, as 24-year-old Jon Lester tossed a no-hitter during a 7-0 win over the Royals on Monday.
The righthander likely isn't concerned with trying to repeat Lester's effort as he is simply trying play well enough to stay on the roster. Bartolo Colon is expected back soon, which could end Masterson's stint with the parent club.
Masterson was sharp in his major league debut, allowing a run and two hits over six frames, but did not receive a decision as the bullpen imploded in a 7-5 setback vs. the Los Angeles Angels on April 24.
Kansas City will hope to provide more offense for Gil Meche (3-5, 5.98), who won for the second time in three starts against Detroit on Thursday. The righthander allowed three runs and six hits over seven innings, striking out six in an 8-4 win. The Royals' ace is 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA in seven career starts vs. Boston.
