Rays go for sweep of Athletics
May 21, 2008 - 12:03 PM Tampa Bay (27-19) at Oakland (24-23) 3:35 pm EDTOAKLAND, California (Ticker) - After a pair of difficult victories, the Tampa Bay Rays will be looking for a sweep Wednesday when they visit the Oakland Athletics in the finale of a three-game series.
It took 13 innings on Monday, but rookie Evan Longoria drilled a two-run homer to deep left field to forge a 7-6 victory. Dioner Navarro played the hero on Tuesday, lifting a ball into left field in the eighth inning that Emil Brown lost in the lights, allowing three runs to score in a 3-2 win.
Veteran closer Troy Percival allowed a run in each game, but still picked up the saves.
Oakland has fallen on hard times recently. After being in first place in the American League West at 22-14 on May 8, the A's have dropped nine of their last 11 and are in danger of dropping to .500 for the first time since April 8.
Offense has been the biggest problem, as Oakland has averaged just two runs per game during their last nine loses, getting shut out three times.
Tampa Bay will send another hot pitcher to the mound on Wednesday when Andy Sonnanstine (6-1, 4.53 ERA) takes his turn in the rotation. The 25-year-old righthander is 5-0 in his last six decisions, including a win on Friday at St. Louis in which he allowed one run in eight innings.
Sonnanstine has succeeded due to excellent command, issuing just 11 walks in 57 2/3 innings this season.
The A's will counter with rookie Dana Eveland (3-3, 3.23). The lefthander is 0-1 over his last three starts despite allowing just five runs in 18 2/3 combined frames.
