White Sox chase eighth straight win
May 22, 2008 - 12:33 PM Cleveland (22-24) at Chi White Sox (25-20) 8:11 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) - Last week, the Cleveland Indians used some solid pitching to string together an impressive winning stretch. However, the Chicago White Sox appear to be doing their division rival one better.
The White Sox eye their eighth straight win on Thursday when they attempt to complete their first three-game home sweep of the Indians since 2003.
Aaron Laffey (2-2, 1.35 ERA) surrendered the first run allowed by Cleveland's starting pitching over 44 1/3 innings in his last start on Thursday. However, he still managed to pitch the Indians to their eighth win in 10 games in a 4-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
Cleveland appeared poised to make a run in the American League Central, but has yet to win since the victory over Oakland, dropping a season-high five straight.
While Cleveland has stumbled primarily due to an inconsistent offense that has scored just 12 runs during its slide, Chicago has reeled off its longest winning streak since taking nine straight from June 15-24, 2006.
To complement the 5.6 runs they have averaged during the winning streak, the White Sox have received some incredible starting pitching, which has yielded a 1.99 ERA in that time. Just as impressive, each starter has tossed at least six frames during the streak.
Mark Buehrle (2-5, 5.27) will try to keep that pitching run going in the series finale. The lefthander allowed just one run and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings during Saturday's 3-1 victory against the San Francisco Giants.
