Tigers look to remain on the offensive against Twins
May 23, 2008 - 1:44 PM Minnesota (23-24) at Detroit (20-27) 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) - The Detroit Tigers go for their fourth straight win when they open up a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins on Friday.
The Tigers are coming off a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners, outscoring the opposition, 30-14, over that span. Detroit had scored just 14 runs over its previous seven contests.
Rookie righthander Armando Galarraga (3-1, 3.06 ERA) hopes to benefit from similar run support when he takes the hill for Detroit.
Galarraga has been one of Detroit's better starters this season and earned the win in his last outing, giving up two runs and one hit in six innings. He walked five and struck out three.
His only loss this season came against Minnesota on May 2 when he gave up four runs - two earned - in six innings. The Tigers lost that contest, 11-1.
The Twins come in losers of two straight games and seven of their last 10 overall. Despite four hits - including a home run - and three RBI from leadoff hitter Carlos Gomez, Minnesota lost, 8-7, to the Texas Rangers in 10 innings on Thursday.
Righthander Kevin Slowey (0-4, 5.49 ERA) hopes to snap a personal four-game losing streak and get the Twins back into the win column when he takes the mound for Minnesota.
Slowey has lost all four of his starts this season, and allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings during Sunday's 6-2 setback to the Colorado Rockies. The 24-year-old walked one and struck out five.
