Vizquel nearing Aparicio's games-played record
May 25, 2008 - 3:09 PM San Francisco (20-29) at Florida (27-20) 1:10 pm EDTMIAMI (Ticker) -- Following a rainout, San Francisco Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel could reach a major milestone in the opener of a doubleheader against the Florida Marlins on Sunday.
If he plays, Vizquel will tie the major league record for games played at his position.
Vizquel has played 2,582 games at shortstop in his 20-year major league career, one shy of fellow Venezuelan Luis Aparicio, who played in the majors from 1956-73 with the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox.
Saturday's rainout was the first at home for the Marlins in four years.
If history is any indication, Vizquel figures to do well at the plate against Florida starter Mark Hendrickson (6-2, 3.72 ERA) as he is hitting .538 (7-for-13) against in his career.
Hendrickson struck out a season-high seven batters over five frames Tuesday in a 3-2 win over Arizona, allowing one run and four hits to win for the first time in three starts.
His opposition will be Matt Cain (2-3, 4.57), who will try to give the Giants a four-game winning streak, their longest since winning four in a row from September 13-18, 2007.
The righthander hopes to rebound from one of his worst outings this season as he allowed six runs and six hits in seven innings of Sunday's 13-8 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
