Mets' Evans seeks repeat performance vs. Rockies

DENVER (Ticker) -- Nick Evans had a quite a debut for the struggling New York Mets.

The 22-year-old will aim for an encore on Sunday as the Mets face the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a three-game series.

Evans, who had his contract purchased from Class AA Binghamton on Saturday to help out an injury-depleted outfield, contributed three doubles and a pair of RBI in a 9-2 victory.

The rookie helped New York snap a season-high five-game skid, temporarily taking some heat off manager Willie Randolph, who has been under fire for the past week.

Evans and yje Mets will try to prolong the woes of Colorado starter Aaron Cook.

Cook (6-3, 3.06 ERA) has been the Rockies' most effective starter but has lost his past two outings. The righthander won six straight starts before being hammered for nine runs and 20 hits in his last 12 innings.

Cook will be opposed by John Maine (5-3, 3.29), who had his four-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday, when he allowed four runs and eight hits in four innings of a 6-1 loss to Atlanta.
