LHP Lester goes to the hill for Red Sox in finale

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) - Jon Lester takes the mound for the first time since his no-hitter as the Boston Red Sox look to salvage the finale of their three-game series against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

Lester (3-2, 3.41 ERA) held the Kansas City Royals hitless on Monday, becoming the first major league pitcher to toss a no-hitter since teammate Clay Buchholz accomplished the feat on September 1.

The lefthander tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings in his last start against Oakland, a 5-0 win here on April 5. Lester is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA in his career against the Athletics.

Joe Blanton (2-6, 3.87) counters for Oakland, which held Boston to just one hit in Saturday's 3-0 victory. The third-year righthander is going for his first win since April 27 - a span of four starts.

More recently, Blanton gave up four runs and six hits with five strikeouts through six innings of a 7-6 setback to the Tampa Bay Rays here on Monday.

Boston's offense could receive a boost with the return of Manny Ramirez, who took a day off Saturday. The All-Star outfielder is hitting just .189 (17-of-90) over his past 24 games.
