Randolph off hot seat but Mets continue to struggle
May 27, 2008 - 12:41 PM Florida (30-20) at NY Mets (23-26) 7:10 pm EDTFLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - New York Mets manager Willie Randolph may be off the hot seat for now, but if his team continues to struggle his job could be in jeopardy again before too long.
The Mets try to end their recent slump when they continue a three-game series against the Florida Marlins on Tuesday.
General manager Omar Minaya gave Randolph a vote of confidence during a news conference on Monday at Shea Stadium just hours before New York lost for the seventh time in the last eight games, 7-3, against the Marlins.
Randolph met with team owner Fred Wilpon, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon and Minaya earlier in the day, leading to speculation that the embattled manager was in danger of being fired.
However, despite a fourth place standing in the National League East Division, Randolph kept his job as the Mets (23-26) fell to 6 1/2 games behind the first-place Marlins.
New York hopes ace Johan Santana (5-3, 3.36 ERA) can help stop their recent slump when he takes the mound on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old lefthander gave up four runs - three earned - and 12 hits while striking out just one in seven innings en route to a 4-2 loss against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.
Andrew Miller (4-3, 5.33) counters for the Marlins after posting a 3-1 record in his last four starts.
