Berkman attempts to continue red-hot hitting vs. Cardinals
May 27, 2008 - 12:47 PM Houston (29-23) at St. Louis (30-22) 8:15 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) - Lance Berkman attempts to continue his incredible May when the Houston Astros begin a three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
Berkman, who is hitting .488 (42-for-86) with eight homers and 21 RBI in May, has been key to the Astros' resurgence this month.
Houston entered the month with a 13-16 record and were five games back in the National Central, but has gone 16-7 this month thanks to an offense that is averaging 5.3 runs in May.
Berkman is hitting .348 (8-for-23) in his career against Tuesday's starter Braden Looper (6-3, 4.34 ERA), who is coming off one of his second-shortest start of the season.
Despite getting the win in Wednesday's 11-3 triumph over San Diego, the righthander allowed three runs and eight hits with a season-high five strikeouts over five frames.
He'll be opposed by Shawn Chacon (1-0, 4.11), who is eyeing his second straight win after setting a major league record by failing to earn a decision in his first nine starts of a season.
The righthander permitted three runs and five hits over seven innings in a 5-3 win over the Cubs on Wednesday.
