Red Sox look to solve road woes vs. Mariners
May 28, 2008 - 1:18 PM Boston (32-23) at Seattle (19-34) 10:10 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox will be in search of just their second win in the team's last 10 road games when they visit the Seattle Mariners in the finale of a three-game set on Wednesday.
After grabbing the series opener to snap a seven-game road slide, the Red Sox dropped a tough, 4-3, decision on Tuesday when Mike Timlin allowed a game-winning single to Jose Lopez in the bottom of the ninth.
Not only did Boston lose the game, but righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka, who leads the team with an 8-0 record and 2.53 ERA, was forced to leave in the fifth inning with right shoulder fatigue. He will be examined on Wednesday.
The setback dropped the Red Sox's road record to 11-18, compared to a 21-5 mark at Fenway Park.
The victory snapped a seven-game slide and set off a raucous celebration at home plate by the Mariners, who own the worst record in the majors.
Boston will try to bounce back behind righthander Tim Wakefield (3-3, 5.19 ERA). The veteran knuckleballer allowed eight runs and eight hits in five innings to suffer a loss during Friday's 8-3 setback to the Oakland Athletics.
Wakefield has allowed 18 runs - 17 earned - over his last 13 innings pitched, going 0-2 in those outings.
Seattle will counter with ace Erik Bedard (3-3, 4.70). The lefthander was roughed up for nine runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings Friday, walking one while striking out three, in a loss against the Yankees.
