Durham, Molina star as Giants blast Diamondbacks

May 29, 2008 - 6:39 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Ray Durham homered and had four RBI Wednesday, powering the San Francisco Giants to an 11-3 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Bengie Molina added three hits, two RBI and also scored twice for the Giants, who had their best offensive showing of the season. Through eight games of the Giants' nine-game road trip, in which the club is 5-3, Molina is batting .625 (20-for-32) with 14 RBI.

"Bengie is a great hitter," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "His track record shows it and when good hitters get into a zone, they are fun to watch and Bengie has been in a zone for a while."

Durham began San Francisco's offensive assault in the second with his second home run of the season - a solo shot into the Diamondbacks' bullpen in left field - off starter Doug Davis (2-2).

After the Giants added another run in the third and four more in the fifth, Durham capped off their four-run sixth with a three-run double.

Over his last 31 games, Durham is hitting .333 (30-for-90).

"When we get guys in scoring position or (have) the opportunity to move guys over, we have been doing that," Durham said. "The games that we have lost, we didn't do that. But yesterday (and today), we did that. That is the main thing, getting guys in scoring position and driving them in with less than two outs."

Davis, who was making just his second start since returning from surgery to remove his cancerous thyroid gland, surrendered six runs and nine hits over five innings, walking three and striking out five.

"I didn't have great command where I could get ahead," Davis said. "When I was pitching behind in the count, that is pretty much when I got hurt, and walks don't help, either."

The loss sent Arizona to its third straight loss, matching its longest losing streak of the season and absorbing its first series loss against a National League West opponent this season.

"This is not an easy park to win in, plus, they are a good team," Bochy said. "We have had our struggles, but to come in here and get the first two is what you want to do and we have played well the last two games. We have pitched well, caught the ball and got timely hitting."

Jonathan Sanchez (3-3) yielded two runs and six hits over six frames, striking out six to end his five-game winless streak for the Giants, who have won five of seven following a season-high six-game losing streak.

"The offense scored a lot of runs and that was the key of the game," Sanchez said. "With a lot of runs behind me, I can go out there and not worry. I was getting ahead of guys. My fastball was working (and so was) my sinker."

Justin Upton ended an 0-for-27 slide - during which he had struck out 18 times - with a two-run double in the sixth off Sanchez to net the Diamondbacks' first runs of the game before Mark Reynolds hit a solo home run for Arizona in the eighth.

"They (the Giants) are playing pretty good; we are just not playing," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said. "That was our worst game of the year right there. We have to have to pick it up tomorrow, keep grinding and go out there, keep our head up and play better.

"The silver lining is Mark squared a couple of balls up and Justin had a big hit. Hopefully, that gets them going."
