Division leaders meet when Rays face White Sox

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- Two first-place teams square off when the Chicago White Sox continue a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.

The White Sox (30-23), who own a two-game lead over the Minnesota Twins for the top spot in the American League Central Division, earned their fourth win in the last five games Thursday, claiming a 5-1 victory during the series opener against the Rays.

Thursday's loss was just Tampa Bay's second in the last seven games and dropped the team to 16-3 over its last 19 home games.

Despite the setback, the Rays (32-22) still own the highest win percentage (.593) in the league and are one game ahead of the Boston Red Sox (32-24) in the AL East.

James Shields (4-3, 3.38 ERA) tries to get Tampa Bay back on track when he takes the mound on Friday.

The 26-year-old righthander gave up four runs - three earned - and eight hits in eight innings, walking one while striking out three but did not factor in the decision during Sunday's 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Jose Contreras (5-3, 3.06) counters for Chicago seeking his fourth win in as many decisions and hasn't lost since May 4.
