Disappointing teams clash when Mariners host Tigers

May 30, 2008 - 2:23 PM Detroit (22-31) at Seattle (20-34) 10:10 p.m. EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- A pair of disappointing teams meet Friday when the Detroit Tigers open up a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners.

Considered by many to contend in their respective divisions - and possibly for an American League pennant - the Tigers and Mariners own two of the three worst records in the AL.

Detroit dominated a three-game series with Seattle last week, outscoring the opposition, 30-14.

But the Tigers have gone just 2-4 since and dropped two out of three against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim earlier in the week. The Tigers avoided a three-game sweep with a 6-2 victory on Wednesday.

Lefthander Nate Robertson (2-5, 5.88 ERA) takes the hill for Detroit, looking to build off recording his second victory of the season. Robertson allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings in the Tigers' 19-3 triumph over the Minnesota Twins last Saturday.

The Mariners have won their last two games and are seeking to match a season high with their third straight win. Seattle defeated Boston, 1-0, on Wednesday.

Carlos Silva (3-4, 5.14) hopes to keep Seattle's momentum going when he takes the mound.

The righthander has lost his last four decisions and has not won since April 17. Silva allowed seven runs - five earned - in six innings last Saturday, suffering the loss in Seattle's 12-6 setback at the New York Yankees.

The 29-year-old lost against Detroit on May 20, surrendering seven runs in just four innings of work.
