Pujols, streaking Cardinals host Pirates

May 30, 2008 - 2:12 PM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Albert Pujols entered the season with questions about a nagging elbow injury. So far it has not hampered the former National League MVP.

Pujols looks to lead the St. Louis Cardinals a third straight win on Friday in the opener of a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pujols blasted his 13th home run of the season and Kyle Lohse threw six-plus effective innings as the Cardinals posted a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Thursday. Pujols finished the series 6-for-10, and raised his average to .359 - third best in the NL.

Pujols now faces his favorite opponent. The 2005 NL MVP is hitting .359 with 34 home runs and 98 RBI in 115 games against Pittsburgh. The 34 home runs are tied with Chicago for the most he's hit against any team.

Zach Duke (2-3, 4.55 ERA) has the unenviable task of slowing the red-hot Pujols. Duke was rocked for five runs - four earned - and 10 hits in four innings of a 12-3 loss to Chicago.

Todd Wellemeyer (5-1, 3.36) gets the ball for St. Louis. Wellemeyer, who is unbeaten in his last five starts, allowed three runs and five hits in six innings of a 4-3 loss to Los Angeles on Sunday.
