Verlander goes to the hill for Tigers
May 31, 2008 - 1:36 PM Detroit (23-31) at Seattle (20-35) 3:55 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- Justin Verlander hopes to keep the Detroit Tigers on the right track when he heads to the hill against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Verlander (2-7, 5.16 ERA) has regained form after his slow start, surrendering just four runs through his previous three starts - a span of 19 innings. But the righthander owns a 1-1 mark over that stretch due to the lack of run support.
Verlander has had much of a challenge against Seattle, posting an impressive 5-0 record in five career meeting, including a 12-8 win last week at Comerica Park where he yielded one run.
In Friday's series opener, Brandon Inge's bases-clearing triple highlighted a seven-run first inning as the Tigers posted a 7-4 victory.
Seattle counters with Felix Hernandez (2-5, 3.60), who is seeking his first victory since defeating Oakland on the road on April 16. Most recently, Hernandez gave up five runs in 7 2/3 innings of a 5-3 setbcak to Boston on Monday.
The hard-throwing righthander is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA over seven career starts when facing the Tigers. But both of Hernandez's wins came last season.
Seattle third baseman Adrian Beltre homered twice Friday.
