Mets Pelfrey needs strong showing vs. Dodgers

May 31, 2008 - 1:54 PM FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Mike Pelfrey aims to snap a personal six-game losing streak on Saturday as the New York Mets continue a four-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pelfrey will also try and help the Mets get back on track after they had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 9-5 loss on Friday. The 24-year-old righthander, who has not won in over a month, may be pitching to save his roster spot.

Pedro Martinez is scheduled to come off the disabled list on Tuesday, and Pelfrey may be optioned to the minors. Pelfrey (2-6, 5.33 ERA) has done nothing to show he should stay so far. The ninth pick of the 2005 draft, Pelfrey has an ERA of 6.47 over his last six starts and has not gotten past the fourth innings in each of his last two outings.

Pelfrey shouldn't be lacking for run support. The Mets, who have scored 25 runs over the last five games may get Ryan Church back for this game. Church was New York's top hitter before missing the last 10 games due to a concussion.

Chad Billingsley (4-6, 3.68) will try and cool off the Mets' hot bats. Billingsley has allowed two runs or less in six of his last seven starts.
