Ramirez leads Red Sox against Orioles
Jun 1, 2008 - 1:54 PM BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Manny Ramirez made history Saturday night with his 500th career homer. He will take aim at Eddie Murray for 23rd place on the all-time list when the Boston Red Sox visit the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.Ramirez took the first pitch he saw from righthander Chad Bradford an estimated 410 feet over the right field wall in the seventh inning to become the 24th player in history to hit 500 in his career. Orioles great Murray is next on the all-time list with 504 blasts.
The historic homer sparked the Red Sox to a 6-3 triumph, marking the first time they have won back-to-back games away from Fenway Park since May 5 and 6 at Detroit.
The game ended on a down note for the Red Sox, however, when David Ortiz, who hit his 13th homer of the season earlier in the game, was forced to leave after fouling a pitch off his wrist. X-rays after the game were negative.
"He went and got an x-ray," Boston manager Terry Francona said. "He took the swing and felt something in his wrist. It was very tender. That's what we know right now. Obviously it's a concern."
Bartolo Colon (2-0, 2.25 ERA) will take the mound for the Red Sox on Sunday. The hefty righthander has won his first two starts as a member of the Red Sox, allowing a total of three runs in 12 frames.
Colon pitched seven innings in his last start Monday at Seattle and should be off of a pitch count for the first time since being activated on May 21.
Baltimore will counter with lefthander Brian Burres (4-4, 4.15). The 27-year-old got hammered by the New York Yankees his last time out, allowing eight runs and 10 hits in just 3 2/3 frames.
