Bruce, Griffey lead Reds against Utley's Phillies
Jun 3, 2008 - 12:25 PM Cincinnati (28-30) at Philadelphia (34-25) 7:05 pm EDTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Jay Bruce is showing why he is regarded as the top prospect in all of baseball.
Bruce aims to continue his incredible start on Tuesday as the Cincinnati Reds face the Philadelphia Phillies in the second game of a four-game series.
The 21-year-old center fielder is hitting .577 (15-for-26) with three homers and seven RBI in seven games since being called up from Class AAA Louisville last Tuesday.
All three of Bruce's home runs have come in the last three games, but Chase Utley's stretch has been better. Utley homered for a fifth straight game tying the club record for a second time this season as the Phillies posted a 5-4 victory on Monday.
One of the more prolific home run hitters had a good view of Bruce's and Utley's exploits. Ken Griffey Jr. got the day off and remains one home run shy of becoming the sixth player in major-league history to hit 600 home runs.
Griffey will shoot for the milestone home run against Adam Eaton (1-3, 4.99 ERA), who finally picked up his first win of the season in his last start. The righthander allowed one run and four hits in six innings of a 6-1 victory over Colorado on Wednesday.
Cincinnati sends ace Aaron Harang (2-7, 3.81) to the hill. Pitching on three days' rest. Harang allowed a season-high six runs and 10 hits in four innings of a 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh on Thursday.
