Angels aim for sweep of lowly Mariners

Jun 4, 2008 - 12:06 PM Los Angeles Angels (36-24) at Seattle (21-38) 4:40 p.m. EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will be looking for a sweep of a three-game series when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.

Expected to battle for the American League West title this season, the Mariners have fallen on hard times and allowed the Angels to run away with the division thus far.

Joe Saunders earned his AL-leading ninth win of the season in Tuesday night's 5-4 win, pushing Anaheim 14 1/2 games ahead of Seattle. Tuesday marked the first time in 14 games the Angels' offense has scored at least five runs. However, the team is 10-4 during that stretch.

The Mariners have had a much more difficult time winning games, ranking last in the AL with a .306 team on-base percentage and 13th in the league with a 4.79 team ERA.

Not surprisingly, Seattle has lost 11 of its last 14 games and has tied the Colorado Rockies for the worst record in the majors.

One of the Mariners problems has been the recent play of Wednesday's starter Carlos Silva (3-5, 6.00 ERA). Seattle lavished the burly righthander with a four-year, $48 million contract in the offseason, but he has not recorded a win since April 17 at Oakland.

Silva has allowed seven runs in each of his last three starts and was removed from his outing Friday against Detroit after surrendering the seven runs in just two-thirds of an inning.

The Angels will counter with righthander Jered Weaver (4-6, 4.69), who is one of the few pitchers to absorb a loss against the Mariners this season. Weaver allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings at Safeco Field on April 11.
