Mauer key to Twins' surge
Jun 5, 2008 - 12:42 PM Baltimore (28-30) at Minnesota (31-28) 1:10 p.m. EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Joe Mauer and the Minnesota Twins shoot for their fourth win in five games when they conclude a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday.
Mauer homered for the second time in three games and drove in three runs Wednesday to lead the Twins to a 7-5 victory over the Orioles.
The 2006 American League batting champion, Mauer has six hits in his last 10 at-bats, including his first home run of the campaign during Monday's 6-5 victory over the New York Yankees. Minnesota's catcher ranks second in the AL with a .330 batting average this season.
Scott Baker (2-0, 4.09 ERA) returns from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday to make his first start since May 3 for the Twins.
Baker, who has been out with a right groin strain since May 7, has registered four straight no decisions after winning his first two starts of the season.
Garrett Olson (4-1, 4.03) counters for the Orioles after allowing two runs and three hits in five innings against Boston on Saturday. However, the 24-year-old lefthander did not factor in the decision during the 6-3.
