Lester makes first home start since no-hitter
Jun 5, 2008 - 1:54 PM Tampa Bay (35-24) at Boston (37-25) 6:05 pm. EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- Jon Lester will receive a raucous ovation when he takes the mound Thursday as the Boston Red Sox aim for a 13th straight home win against the Tampa Bay Rays.
In his last home start May 17, the cancer survivor sent the partisan crowd into a frenzy when he struck out Kansas City's Alberto Callaspo on his 130th pitch of the night to finish off Boston's second no-hitter in eight months.
The Fenway faithful would much rather focus on that night than Lester's last two performances. The righthander has allowed seven runs - six earned - and 14 hits in his last 10 innings.
Lester (3-3, 3.67 ERA) will try and lead the Red Sox to their third straight win. Josh Beckett threw six solid innings and J.D. Drew had an RBI double and scored twice as Boston posted a 5-1 victory on Wednesday.
James Shields (4-3, 3.24) aims to slow the Red Sox, who are 3-1 since losing David Ortiz to a wrist injury. Shields is 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA in two starts against Boston this season. The Rays' ace tossed a shutout in a 3-0 win on April 27, but was rocked for seven runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings of a 12-4 loss here on May 3.
